Can You Eat Crab Meat While Pregnant?

Seafood like crab meat contains omega 3 acids and B vitamins, making it an essential source of healthy nutrition for pregnant women.
However, pregnant women need to be especially careful about safe food preparation since their overworked immune systems can struggle to fight off infections.

Mercury
According to the American Pregnancy Association (APA), mercury found in seafood can be dangerous to the development of a baby's brain and nervous system. The Food and Drug Administration recommends that children and pregnant women avoid eating types of fish that have high levels of mercury like grouper and swordfish. Crab meat contains a low mercury level but should be consumed in moderation.

Recommended Servings
The variety of crab with the lowest levels of mercury is king crab, according to the American Pregnancy Association. APA also states that it is safe for pregnant women to eat around one 6 oz. serving of king crab twice a week. Snow crab, blue crab and dungeness crab have slightly higher levels of mercury, so pregnant women should consume six or fewer 6 oz. servings of those crabs per month.

Preparation
Pregnant women are more susceptible to infections from bacteria in contaminated food, according to Colorado State University. Pregnant women should avoid eating refrigerated crab meat if possible. CSU recommends eating crab that is sold in a sealed can or pouch instead.
